What Is a Subluxation? Plus 3 Chiropractic Myths We Hear Every Week

Short answer: a vertebral subluxation is a vertebra that has lost its proper position or movement and is interfering with the nervous system. It sends “bad data” from the spine to the brain and keeps the body in a stressed state. A chiropractic adjustment is a specific, gentle force that restores movement and reduces that interference, so the body can heal and regulate itself. We move the bone; you heal the body.

Why chiropractors are spine specialists

Your brain and spinal cord control 100% of your body’s function, and your body protects them accordingly: the brain in the skull, the spinal cord in the spine. We are spine specialists only because of the direct relationship with brain function. If your brain were in your nose, we would be nose specialists.

Research tells us a large share of the brain’s stimulation comes from the movement of the spine, especially the neck. Simply put, your brain is a computer that needs current to run, and much of that current is generated by movement. Good movement, healthy spine, healthy brain.

The three causes of subluxation

Chiropractic has always described three kinds of stress that create subluxations:

  • Traumas (physical): birth itself, falls, sports, car accidents, and the slow trauma of hours in the same posture.
  • Toxins (chemical): what we breathe, eat and drink. One easy win is filtering your water.
  • Thoughts (emotional): chronic stress, which tightens the same muscles and locks the same joints as a physical injury.

Whatever the cause, the effect is the same: less movement, corrupted information to the brain, and a nervous system that cannot shift out of “fight or flight”.

What an adjustment actually does

What you think it does: back pops. What it actually does: restores brain-body connection, regulates the nervous system, promotes wellness, encourages healing. The pop is the surface of the iceberg. The adjustment releases the natural flow of nerve impulses, as B.J. Palmer put it a century ago, and the neuroscience is finally catching up: Dr. Heidi Haavik’s EEG studies show a specific adjustment changes how the brain processes sensory information.

Myth 1: “Chiropractic is only for back pain”

Back pain is why many adults first come in, and chiropractic is very good for it. But because the focus is the nervous system, people visit us for neck pain, headaches, stress, poor sleep, posture and, in babies, feeding and digestion issues. Pain is a symptom; function is the goal.

Myth 2: “Chiropractic is only for adults”

We check newborns in their first days of life with fingertip pressure. Kids benefit from gentle care that supports healthy growth; seniors from better mobility. Chiropractic is for all ages and stages, and whole families come together.

Myth 3: “Adjustments hurt”

They are gentle and specific. Most people feel relaxed, some energized, afterwards. For babies and pregnant women the force is a small fraction of what is used on an adult, and there is never twisting or cracking of a baby.

Frequently asked questions

Can I feel a subluxation? Sometimes, as stiffness or pain. Often not at all, which is why we scan and examine rather than rely on how you feel that day.

Does a subluxation go away on its own? Movement and rest help, but restrictions that have been there for months or years usually need specific input to change.

How do you find them? With the exam, the posture analysis and the INSiGHT scan at your initial assessment.

Curious how strong the signal is between your brain and your body? Book an assessment and find out.
