Prenatal care

Chiropractic care during pregnancy

Prenatal chiropractic care at illumINNATE is gentle, specific care for pregnant women, adapted to every trimester, led by Dr. Kelli Turelli, an ICPA-trained prenatal and pediatric specialist. The goal is a balanced pelvis, a well-functioning nervous system and a more comfortable pregnancy, so your body can do what it was designed to do.

Why pregnant women see a chiropractor

Pregnancy changes your centre of gravity, loosens ligaments and asks a lot of your lower back and pelvis. Many moms come to us with low-back or pelvic pain, sciatica, rib discomfort, or simply wanting to prepare their body for birth.

We focus on the alignment and mobility of the pelvis and spine and on how the nervous system is adapting to the changes of pregnancy. A balanced pelvis gives the baby room to settle into an optimal position and lets mom move and rest more comfortably.

How we adapt care to pregnancy

  • Pregnancy pillows and tables that let you lie face down comfortably, at any stage.
  • Gentle, low-force techniques chosen for each trimester and each mom.
  • Specific attention to pelvic balance, including the ligaments and muscles that support the uterus.
  • INSiGHT scans to track how your nervous system is coping across the pregnancy.
  • Care coordinated with your midwife, doula or obstetrician whenever you wish.

Before, during and after

Dr. Kelli also works with women who are planning a pregnancy (preconception care) and with new moms in the postpartum period, when the body is recovering from birth and adapting to feeding, carrying and sleeping in new positions. Many families then bring their newborn for a gentle check too.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

Yes. Prenatal chiropractic care uses gentle, specific techniques adapted to each trimester, on tables and pillows designed for pregnancy. Dr. Kelli Turelli is trained through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) in prenatal care.

When should I start?

Any time. Some moms start in the first trimester to prepare their body; others come in the third trimester with discomfort or to prepare for birth. Care can continue right up to the due date.

Can chiropractic care help with a breech baby?

Chiropractors do not turn babies. What we do is work on pelvic balance and the tension of the surrounding ligaments, which gives the baby the best possible room to move into position on their own. We are happy to discuss your case with your midwife or doctor.

Will I need to lie on my stomach?

Only if you are comfortable. We use pregnancy pillows with a cut-out for the belly, and we can also adjust you on your side or seated.

Does it hurt?

No. Adjustments during pregnancy are gentle and many moms find the visit relaxing. You should never feel forced into a position.
